Burgeoning online mutual aid (MA) platforms in China have provided low-cost critical illness insurance coverage, via so-called MA plans, to over 300 million members. However, the impact of the rapid-growing MA platforms on the commercial insurance market is unclear. This study examines whether MA platforms boost or compete with commercial insurance companies. Using a survey data, we examine the impact of individuals’ participation in and awareness of MA plans, instrumented with WeChat and mobile payment usages, on their purchase behaviors of commercial (critical illness) insurance. We find that participation in and better awareness of MA plans both contribute to individual’s intension to purchase commercial (critical illness) insurance. These results indicate that MA platforms do not harm and may even promote the commercial (critical illness) insurance market in China.

陈泽,博士毕业于比利时鲁汶大学和清华大学,中国人民大学财政金融学院保险系助理教授,清华大学全球私募股权研究院兼职研究员。在Insurance:Mathematic and Economics, Scadinavian Actuarial Journal等中英文学术期刊上发表论文数篇。
