The English Language Fellow Program is the premiere opportunity for highly qualified TESOL professionals to enact meaningful and sustainable changes in the way that English is taught abroad. Through projects developed by U.S. Embassies in more than 80 developing countries, Fellows work directly with local teachers, students, and educational professionals to enhance the quality of English language instruction offered at universities and other academic institutions.

 

9:00-:915- Introductions

 

9:15-10:00- More Communication, Please: Listening and Speaking

Although most teachers are familiar with the concept of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), they may or may not actually be carrying out their lessons in a communicative way. This workshop will briefly review the core concepts of CLT and their importance in the language classroom. Through several interactive activities, including double-gap song fill and partner vocabulary review, participants will leave with tangible ways of making their listening and speaking lessons more communicative in nature.

11:05- 11:50, Literature Circles to Enhance English Language Learning

Literature circles are student led book discussions that take place in the classroom supporting language learning. This workshop will discuss the benefits of using Literature circles in the classroom while also providing advice for teachers to set up their own literature circles. In addition, the participants will take part in a literature circle to gain a full understanding of the process and benefits.

1:00-1:45- TED Talks in the English Language Classroom

In this workshop, the presenter will introduce the participants to TED, discuss and demonstrate pre-listening, while-listening, and post-listening activaties for students centered on a specific TED talk.  Participants will have a chance to practice some of the activities.

1:55-2:40 -More Communication, Please: Reading and Writing

This workshop will build upon what was learned in the ‘More Communication, Please: Listening and Speaking' workshop by briefly reviewing core concepts of CLT and applying them. While the emphasis will be on listening and speaking activities, integration of all four skills will also be discussed. Participants will have a chance to try picture description activities as well as running dictation. These activities will be a springboard for making reading and writing activities more interactive and meaningful.
