Abstract: This paper examines the effects of foreign bank entry on efficiencies of domestic banks based on a sample of 113 Chinese banks over the period 2002-2013. We construct two bank-specific measures of exposure to foreign banks, namely branch presence and minority equity ownership, and test whether these two types of foreign bank exposure affect the efficiencies of domestic banks. Our results show that (1) Foreign bank branching reduces the profit efficiency of domestic banks by increasing their costs; and (2) The minority foreign ownership raises the profit efficiency of domestic banks by decreasing their costs and increasing their non-interest income. Our results suggest that there are competitive effects from foreign bank branching and knowledge spillover from minority foreign ownership. Further, we show that (3) Greater geographical and cultural distance between a foreign bank's headquarter and the local branches reduce their impact on domestic banks. (4) Greater geographical and cultural distance between of headquarter of minority foreign shareholder and domestic bank reduces their impact on domestic banks. 

主讲人简介：何振宇，2009年获波士顿大学经济学哲学博士，现任上海交通大学安泰经济与管理学院副教授。何教授的主要研究领域包括实证产业组织，经济发展和应用计量经济学。他的论文曾经发表在 International Economic Review, Journal of Econometrics, International Journal of Industrial Organization 和 Journal of Money, Credit and Banking等期刊。
