Abstract:

The Porter Hypothesis posits that well-designed environmental regulations stimulate innovation, which could leads to efficiency gains or perhaps profitable opportunities for regulated firms. Previous theoretical works that aimed at evaluating the Porter Hypothesis neglect two important aspects in analyzing the effects of stringent environmental regulations, namely firm heterogeneity and general equilibrium effect. In this paper, we fill this gap by revisiting the Porter Hypothesis in the lens of heterogeneous-firms, general equilibrium framework a la Melitz and Ottaviano (2008). Several novel results emerged from this analysis, which could contribute to enhance our understanding about environmental regulation tightening and firm competitiveness.
