Abstract

We use the exogenous variation in the marriage market sex ratio that resulted from Mao¡¯s mass send-down movement of the 1960s and 1970s to study the impact of gender imbalance on marriage market outcomes in China. Using census data, we document the effect of the movement on marriage and birth decisions of the sent-down cohorts and the subsequent changes in the sex ratios for the generation that followed. Exploiting this variation in sex ratio caused by rustication intensity we find that relative gender scarcity significantly affected the formation and dissolution of marriages, educational attainment, and subsequent household living arrangements, but do not find that it encouraged serial polygamy.
